Election of the new President of the Lebanese Republic
HE President Michel Sleiman

On Sunday, May 25, 2008, General Michel Sleiman was elected and sworn in as the 12th President of the Lebanese Republic.

After a long-standing crisis that polarized the Lebanese political spectrum, General Michel Slieman emerged as a consensus candidate, acceptable to all sides. His military achievements, as Commander-in-Chief of the army, entrusted him with the respect and confidence of all internal parties, the Arab countries and the international community. His election with a majority of 118 votes out of 127 and the attendance of his election by more than 50 foreign leaders reflect this international and nationwide support.

LIVE LEBANON

We would like to inform you about a new initiative that connects Lebanese people and associations from around the world in support of local development projects in Lebanon. It relies on the long tradition of generous contributions made by Lebanese expatriates living all over the world.

This Development Project is called LIVE LEBANON, & it was launched last Thursday November 12, by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Lebanon in cooperation with a wide range of partners, including the Directorate General of Emigration under the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, local municipalities and NGOs in the project areas, and Lebanese individuals and associations worldwide.

In collaboration  with the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNDP is dedicating itself to creating a network of individuals and associations worldwide who are committed to local development in Lebanon’s most underprivileged areas.

For this purpose the website, www.livelebanon.net  , has been created as a platform for the project, visitors can make an online donation to development and community projects throughout Lebanon and follow up on the projects as they are being implemented. The Internet is used as a way to establish a network across borders, engaging new actors in development projects and promoting constructive partnerships.

For the first phase of LIVE LEBANON, four areas have been selected: the North, Bekaa, Mount Lebanon & Beirut, and the South of Lebanon.

We encourage everybody to check the website of Live Lebanon, to know more about this initiative.

The Government of the Republic of Lebanon is proud to announce that the Jeita Grotto site has qualified to enter the second round of voting after its success in the first round.

The Jeita Grotto is approaching the final stages of becoming one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. For this to happen, we need your help.

To vote, please click the link http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/liveranking/

and register with your e-mail address.                                 Jeita Grotto is one of the most impressive underground caverns in the world. Situated under Mount Lebanon in the Nahr el Kalb (Dog River) Valley, these caves, which have been known to man since Paleolithic times, consist of a lower and upper gallery. The caves were rediscovered by the American missionary Reverend William Thomson in 1836, who ventured 50 meters (164ft) underground. In 1873 engineers working for the Beirut Water Company explored a further 1000 meters (3281ft) into the caves. Today, visitors can explore the 6200-meter deep (20,341ft) lower gallery by boat, whilst the upper gallery, which was not discovered until 1958 can be visited on foot by traveling down a 120-meter (394ft) tunnel. There are numerous multicolored stalactites and stalagmites, and a huge underground lake in what is one of the world's most impressive natural wonders.
